It’s November! Which means the month of friendship and gratitude. And although we’d like our students to practice kindness all year long, November is a great place to begin. One of the best activities you can do to start is writing about what makes a great friend. But why stop there? In this article, you’ll find 5 great friendship writing prompts to use this month.
Not only will you get five new writing ideas for November, you’ll also get a FREE writing resource at the end!
5 Friendship Writing Prompts
It’s always great when we can combine two of our lesson plans into one. It saves time, and your students can learn that writing about a topic helps them learn about it more! So let’s put writing and friendship together for some friendship writing prompts.
Write About A Time A Friend Made You Laugh
Have your students think back about a really funny experience with their friend. Did they tell a joke? Did they do a funny dance? Or did THEY laugh so hard that milk came out of their nose? This would make a great friendship writing prompt when you’re working on the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
What Adventure Would You Take With Your Friend?
I love road trips. LOVE them. This past summer, my best friend, Kara and I drove all the way to Ocean City, Maryland with Dave Matthews Band playing the whole 12 hours. It was heaven.
Ask your students what adventure you would take with a friend? Where would they go? How would they get there? This is a great writing prompt if you’re teaching landforms too, because given the choice, I’d take a trip with Kara to the ocean anyday.
What Makes A Good Friend?
Here’s an opportunity to get some interactive writing in. This friendship writing prompt can be done together as a class, or individually for a nice bulletin board display in the hallway.
Interactive writing is a great way to involve your whole class in a writing assignment. It’s also a great way to help your struggling writers with a specific skill. Learn more about Interactive Writing here.
Make Friendship Posters
This is a great way to squeeze some adjectives or character traits into your writing plans. Each student gets a piece of paper with their name at the top. Your students will go into a rotation to write kind words or phrases that describe each of their classmates. Make sure that you go in order though, so nobody gets skipped.
Writing is more than sentences on a blank piece of paper, so this is a great way to show how much fun it can be to write!
Write About A Gift You’d Like To Give To Your Friend
Ask your students, “What gift did you choose? Why did you choose it?” Even better, encourage your students to put some thought into their gifts to make sure it’s something their friend would appreciate.
I really like this friendship writing prompt because it helps your kiddos think about giving rather than receiving.
I hope these friendship writing prompts bring a lot of happiness to your classroom this month. Each prompt is designed to have your students practice showing kindness to others.
