Are your students getting tired of the spelling word games you assign? I know that my spelling station is the one that I need to update the most. The spelling activities and games that held their attention in October don’t have the same effect in February! So why not add some NEW spelling word games?
Do you remember those “Choose Your Own Adventure” books? The kind where the protagonist has to make a decision that you get to make for them and turn to the page in the book to see what happens? Confession time… I always peeked.
How To Make The Spelling Word Games
Did you know that you can use Google Slides to make your own version of this concept? You can turn the idea of students making their own choice into a game! I’m going to show you how to turn it into some spelling word games that your kids will LOVE and you can make in a very short amount of time!
Watch this video to see it in action!
Turn Your Spelling Word Games Into New Activities
What else could you use this for? Think about the rest of your subjects. Want to have your students practice their math facts? What about vocabulary? Can you take your science or social studies vocabulary and turn it into a game where they choose the definition? What would that lead them to? Consider an area in your curriculum that your students struggle with – Is there a game you could make to bring their motivation back?
The possibilities are endless. Best yet, you can take the spelling games you made and use them as a template for new games. All you need to do is make sure the links go to the correct slides. Other than that, all the work is done for you!
Watch These Games In Action
My students LOVED these. I had fun making them too. I found that if I assigned these on a Friday, the behavior at my spelling stations was AMAZING. Plus, my students knew that they had the spelling games to look forward to. I also added audio to each slide, so words that were hard to figure out can be read for my students.
I know that you’re going to love making these games for your students. But I also know how crazy-busy everyone is this time of the year. So I have a FULL year-long set available at literacystations.com. You can pick up one spelling skill at a time, or grab them all for the full year. Watch this video to see what the games look like.
When your student begins playing the spelling word game, they will view the picture and hear the word. Audio is embedded on each slide for emerging readers. Clicking on the correct spelling of the word will lead them to a gold coin. Clicking on the incorrect spelling will prompt your student to try again. They have unlimited attempts to find the correct spelling of the word. When they have worked their way through the game, they reach a treasure chest!
